Like many generations before them, Gen Z struggles with mental health. The difference is that they are also a generation of digital natives. How do we engage this demographic in conversations around mental health? Through leveraging technology to create digital media and apps that help deconstruct stigma!
Who We Are:
The glowmedia project offers free films and resources to help young people develop the emotional agility necessary to thrive. Through their films, the glowmedia project educates youth, their families, and educators on ways to reduce stigma, reduce misconceptions, and reinforce the reality that mental health affects everyone. Their films are designed for use in both large group and classroom settings with accompanying guides to facilitate discussions.
The Neolth app provides stress and mental health support by delivering on-demand, self-guided care. Neolth screens students for social-emotional needs and recommends personalized relaxation practices, videos and livestream events that build resilience, educate and reduce stigma. Neolth makes real-time referrals to crisis resources and shares students’ progress with school stakeholders.
What We're Doing:
Neolth and the glowmedia project are working together to bring the conversation about youth mental health to the forefront. Glowmedia’s films discuss relevant mental health topics such as addiction, LGBQT+ identity, body image and eating disorders, mood disorders, medication management, and how academic stress affects your wellbeing. Neolth is excited to announce that glowmedia’s films are now available on their app!
“Warning: Take Only as Directed” is a short film musical and teacher/professional resource that serves to reduce teen prescription drug abuse. This film addresses the current widespread misuse of prescription medications and its negative impacts on today's culture.
“This is Me” is a film about Luke who wants to reveal his sexual orientation to his family and friends, but worries how the news will affect those relationships.
“Do Supermodels Eat Popcorn” is a film about Natalie’s unhealthy relationship with food and a complicated family dynamic.
“Gotta Get It” is a story about Brandon, who struggles with the pressure to earn a college scholarship, showing how much stress teens feel to succeed.
“King of the World” is a story that raises awareness about bipolar disorder and emphasizes the importance of peer and family support for those living with a mental illness.
Students using the Neolth app can watch these films in the Student Stories section of the Community Module. Guides to the glowmedia project’s films are also included. These guides are there to introduce mental health topics and the potential negative impacts on health. Spreading awareness will help reduce stigma, allowing those impacted to seek help.
The glowmedia project’s films are a great way to facilitate discussions around mental health. Students viewing these films can use Neolth’s app to work through any emotions that arise while watching the films. General inquiries can be sent to hello@neolth.com or Info@glowmedia.org
